LOOK BACK IN ANGER
Synopsis:
There's a huge social gulf between Jimmy and Alison. Her family is upper-middle class military, while Jimmy is decidedly working-class.
He had to campaign hard against her family's disapproval to win her and he transfers his frustrations to his relationships with Alison, with Helena (her snooty best friend) and Cliff, an amiable Welsh lodger who attempts to keep the peace.
BHTC NOTES: As detailed in the press reviews (below), there was concern whether Burgess Hill audiences would come and see such a radical play (for that time).
PLAYWRIGHT:
John Osborne. Look Back In Anger was first performed in 1956 and became known as the first of the 'Kitchen Sink Dramas', the hallmark of which was a more realistic representation of social life; country houses and tennis courts were out; ironing boards and minor domestic squalor were in, which was a reaction against the Noel Coward / Terence Rattigan style of dramatic setting.
