AMONGST BARBARIANS
Synopsis:
Set in the 1980's in Penang, Malaysia, two young men have been arrested for drug trafficking. As they both face the death penalty, their relatives travel to Penang to come to their rescue. However, they soon find out that there is nothing they can do to save the boys' lives. In the course of their futile attempts at influencing the authorities, their racism becomes more than apparent.
The question which is never made explicit is of course who the real barbarians are!
BHTC NOTES: For the first time since the club took ownership of the theatre, raked seating and a revolving central set was utilsed to great effect.
PLAYWRIGHT:
Michael Wall (November 22, 1946 to June 11, 1991), wrote over 40 plays during his short life, the most well known of which includes Amongst Barbarians, for which he won the 1989 Mobil prize for playwriting.
